Leading the way…

What does that mean?

Think about being a Cub Scout. You came to den meetings and did a lot of different and fun things. But who decided what to do and who planned the activities? The Den Leaders, right?

Sports teams are a lot of fun, too. But who decides who plays what position, who’s on the starting lineup and when to substitute? The coach, right?

There is one thing that makes Scouting different from all other youth groups. Do you know what it is?

Well, it is not the uniform. Every soccer, basketball, and baseball team has a uniform.
It is not the fun activities. There are a lot of other things that are fun.
And it certainly isn’t cleaning dirty pots and pans on a campout.!!

What makes Scouting special is that YOU make the decisions!

That’s right! YOU run the troop. Baden-Powell made it very plain in Aids to Scoutmastership when he wrote,

“The best progress is made in those Troops where power and responsibility are really put into the hands of the Patrol Leaders.”

This is real decision making power. And not it’s not just Patrol Leaders. All of the troop leadership positions have a hand in making the Troop run. As a troop leader you will:
Plan and run troop meetings,
Pick troop outings, where to camp, what to do,
Plan advancement opportunities for all troop members
Select High-Adventure programs
Determine troop policy
Help other Scouts along the trail to Eagle.

Sound cool? It really is! The adults are there to provide support but YOU will be making the decisions.

Because being a leader is more than just sewing on a patch we have put together job descriptions for the troop leadership positions. They will give you a good idea of what each job is all about and what you will be required to do.

Here’s how to be considered for a position. First read the job descriptions, qualifications, and job responsibilities. Then decide what you want to do and talk it over with your parents. You can also talk it over with other Scouts who have served in that position. Finally, get a troop job application form, fill it out, have your parent(s) read and sign it and turn it in.

So, are you ready to “Lead the way”? We sure hope so!

I hope that you are doing well today. We thought we would bring a little focus on the details of the upcoming camping trip. We will be camping on a troop level. This means we all eat the same thing and we pull together as a large group to cook and clean. I will be purchasing the food; therefore it will not be necessary for us to meet on Thursday night. It is imperative that we receive notification that you will attend if you are going by Wednesday. A simple email to me and a check to Troop 77 will reserve your spot. We will collect checks Monday night at the scout meeting. If you cannot be there Monday, then please drop a check off to Christy Tierney or myself. My office is in the Lampe Building at 237 E Market Street. Do please email me and indicate that you are going though

Camping fee 45 dollars

This includes a gas allowance for the drivers like last time.

Our camp ground looks nice

http://www.lanierscampground.com/

It is not located on the beach. We will have to drive to the beach, but it’s not far. Personally, I like this in a way… not so much sand in the sleeping bag. We will be tent camping by the way.

We will be cooking fish, shrimp and oysters. I hope we catch some fish so the scouts can clean them and cook them. I will puchase some fish, just in case. You know…many things may happen or not, but we will eat well.

Here’s a good opportunity to do a quick merit badge. If you look it over, I think you can do this. The real trick is catching two fish. Are you really going fishing or catching? We will assign you a counselor for this on the camping trip. This could be a fun and tasty way to achieve.

Here is the worksheet: http://meritbadge.org/wiki/images/2/2e/Fishing.pdf

Fishing Requirements

1.Explain to your counselor the injuries that could occur while fishing and the proper treatment, including cuts, scratches, puncture wounds, insect bites, hypothermia, dehydration, and heat reactions. Explain how to remove a hook that has lodged in your arm. Name and explain five safety practices you should always follow while fishing.

2.Learn and explain the differences between two types of fishing outfits. Point out and identify the parts of several types of rods and reels. Explain how and when each would be used. Review with your counselor how to care for this equipment.

3.Demonstrate the proper use of two different types of fishing equipment.

4.Demonstrate how to tie the following knots: clinch, palomar, turle, blood loop (barrel knot), and surgeon’s loop. Explain how each knot is used and when to use it.

5.Name and identify five basic artificial lures and five natural baits and explain how to fish with them. Explain why bait fish are not to be released.

6.Explain the importance of practicing Leave No Trace and how it positively affects fishing resources.

7.Give the regulations affecting game fishing where you live. Explain why they were adopted and what you accomplish by following those regulations.

8.Explain what good outdoor sportsmanlike behavior is and how it relates to fishermen. Tell how the Outdoor Code of the Boy Scouts of America relates to a fishing sports enthusiast, including the aspects of littering, trespassing, courteous behavior, and obeying fishing regulations.

9.Catch two different kinds of fish and identify them. Release at least one of them unharmed. Clean and cook another fish.

I hope I have answered most of your questions. If not, please shoot me a email. I will try to find someone who really knows the correct answer. Michael Creech is our trip master on this event. He is a expert in the sport of surf fishing. I personally have wanted to do this trip for four years and it has never worked out. I hope we have good weather for fishing.
